There was silence, the lake side devoid of horses. At least temporarily, until the silence and stillness was broken by a lone mare and her young foal stepped out warily from the bush and trees. The foal stayed close to its parents side hugging against her.
Bella looked around ears pricked listening to sounds about her before she slowly approached the lake to drink from the crystalline waters. At a sound her head raised to listen alert trying to understand just what was approaching. Was it a threat or not. A soft snort escaped her delicate muzzle, causing her nostrils to flare.
Upon sensing no threat she once again lowered her head to finish her drink. Her ears were shifting constantly to listen to the sounds around her. The foal was wandering off a bit soon scampering back to her at her call though. After she'd finished her drink she moved a short distance from the lake side to start to eat. The sun was shining down on her dark chocolate body and gleaming off her yellow'd mane turning it almost silver.
The foal next to her was predominantly dark chocolate brown in colour with hints of small white areas breaking up the otherwise dark brown courtesy of his paint father. There were thin streaks of white through the still short mane and fluffed tail. The face was almost fully white with one eye blue. He had laid down near where his mother was grazing snuffling about curious.

Wildfire trotted along around the lakeside, looking for a bit for something to catch her interest on such a fine day as this. For now, she was taking a bit of a stroll around the lake, and was quite enjoying herself. The quiet breeze ruffled her main a bit and the soft scent of lavender calmed her. As did the soothing picture of the water lapping at the grassy shore while sun glittered off the rippling water. Her steady breathing coupled with the soft thud of her hooves on the turf also kept the she horse relaxed. Who wouldn't be with such a picturesque scene? Her head tossed at the thought, she wouldn't want to much such a horse if they existed.
Her mood only lifted further as the wind carried the scent of a mare and her foal. She loved foals, such cute creatures. As she rounded a few trees the couple came into view, and she slowed a bit, ears perked in curiosity without the slightest hint of aggression. She had no intentions of harming either one, what would be her motives for such a horrendous deed?
The black mare stopped a respectful distance from the two, not wanting to scare the mother, and glad to see another horse around. "Hello." she whinnied a greeting and flicked her tail. She lowered her head to get a better look at the foal, and nickered in a friendly greeting to the young one too, a smile on her face. "That is a lovely young foal." Wildfire commented, her gaze on the colt(?).

Bella's ears pricked in the direction of the other mare as her head raised ears starting to go back in displeasure. "...Thank you" she mumbled almost as if it pained her to accept the compliment. She was ignoring the greeting hoping the other horse would leave her be. No one could force her again then.
Of course the foal being well a foal, and therefore curious he didn't mind his mother was feeling uncertain. Instead he'd stood to his feet cantering over on his long slightly unsteady legs short tail whisking to look up at Wildfire. "What's your name then?" he asked without giving his just looking at her head tilted.
Bella's eyes had widened at her colt approaching that other horse slightly, the whites of her eyes showing in panic cantering towards the two now wanting to protect her colt. She was wary of Wildfire and everything in her screamed it was a threat. Of course everything in her screamed that about every horse she met.

Wildfire nickered softly in greeting to the cute little colt, not noticing how the mother was acting. My name is Wildfire, what is yours?" she asked the colt, thinking it was a cute little thing. Someday she wanted to settle down and have some foals herself, maybe have a herd or something. That day wasn't today, but even so, she did love the cute bundles of fur propped up on spindly little legs.
The black pelted mare then noticed Bella cantering quickly towards her, and her ears lay to the side defensively. She turned around and cantered a fairly short distance away, but hopefully enough to appease the mother, and kept her gaze on the female in case she kept charging in an attempt to drive her off. Snorting, she was slightly annoyed. Wildifre understood the protective instincts of motherhood, but still, it was a bit annoying when she had put forth an effort to appear non threatening. And once again, what was she to gain from harming such a young horse? Certainly nothing that she could imagine.
It would have probably been smarter to just go away and leave the duo in peace, but Wildfire had been lacking company for some time, and was therefore more determined to stick around and hopefully strike up a conversation. "I don't want to hurt you or your foal, I just wanted someone to talk to." she said calmly, looking fairly relaxed but alert enough to run should the mother turn hostile. She wouldn't push things too far, it wasn't worth getting a bite over.

"I'm Sable," the foal responded fluffy tail twitching. "Hey! Where you going?" he asked as Wildfire suddenly moved away confused. Then he felt the earths slight shake as Bella had charged giving a sigh. Why did she always have to do this? Always ruining his fun. He wanted to meet the other horses.
Bella was content with that distance, just watching the other warily. Her ears were still partially pinned back as she nuzzled over her foal. One ear by now had shifted forward to listen to what else was around her. A soft snort blew from her nostrils.
"What purpose does talking to anyone have?" she asked still unsure. Tail flicked through the air, whipping at the odd flies that were near her hindquarters. She was still regarding Wildfire with a certain amount of caution, trying to keep down the part of her that wanted to be more social. Being more social got you hurt.

Wildfire pawed the ground a bit at the mare's question. How do you answer something so broad as that? What it such a horrible thing to want to be social? The black mare was still fairly young, and was not quite familiar with all of the dangers the world had to offer. Because of this, she was not as cautious with others, and didn't always understand the caution others took around her.
"Well, its not exactly fun to be alone all the time, now is it?" was all she could come up with for an answer. She thought about it a bit more, and decided she might as well be blunt if she wanted to get anywhere fast. "What purpose would harming you or your foal have to me?" she neighed, lifting her head up with ears forward in curiosity towards the mare's answer. She was still careful with her posture so as not to seem aggressive. Her black tail swished behind her in the breeze, as well as her mane. Her head tossed a little as some of the hair went into her face a bit more then was comfortable for her vision. "My name is Wildfire." she said in a friendly greeting, in case Bella had not heard her say it to Sable.

"Its safer to not socialise" she stated, the events of earlier years still somewhat keeping her in its grip. Sable on the other hand didn't know such fear. He was already trying to go over to find out more about Wildfire. He wanted to be around horses. He wanted to know more about them. Besides he was sure Wildfire wasn't scary.
Once more he left his mothers side to approach, not getting as close this time looking back at Bella. Bella gave a disgruntled snort moving closer again to Sable. She looked over at Wildfire as the horse spoke its name. "...Bella" she eventually offered in response. It was rather grudgingly given name, head turned away a bit. She'd not spoken her name for a while. It....reminded her of being in a herd.
But the herd couldn't protect her could it? She gave a soft snort. She'd still been forced by the beta stallion. She shook her head forelock and mane falling into her face. She had Sable, he was the only company she needed. At least that's what she tried to tell herself. The herd couldn't protect her, so why should she trust a herd again. Gently she nipped at Sable to remind him to stay near to her.
Very slowly keeping an eye on Wildfire however she lowered her head plucking at a few strands of grass. Her ears were pricked constantly in Wildfires directon. She trusted her enough if she stayed over there. If she kept her distance. For her to be closer would take a while longer to gain that amount of trust.

Wildfire's ear perked curiously towards the mother as she spoke, a bit of glee in her eyes. She felt a rather foal-ish attitude overcome her at the thought of playing with a foal. Her front hooves pranced a bit when the other introduced herself, and Wildifre felt like she had gained some ground. "So, where are you from? came a curious neigh from the black mare. She hadn't seen this duo before, but maybe both wandered and just happened to have never met. It was possible. But also possible this other horse could have come from a herd.
Wildfire hadn't encountered many herds yet, though she hadn't looked much. The hot blooded mare spent much of her time at the Long Stretch, galloping around peacefully to her heart's content. She loved to run and feel the wind in her face, blowing back her mane while her hooves pounded onto the terf creating the roaring sound of thunder in her ears...
Even so, the peaceful quiet of the lake was also a wonderful thing. The calm, cooling waters. The lingering scent of lavender that hung gently in the air. Not overpowering, but not too subtle so as to not be noticed. It was a soothing place, the opposite of what the Long Stretch had come to represent to her. A quiet huff of breath signaled the mare's return to reality, calmer then before.
